Hamburg weddings are often more direct than celebrations further south. Many begin with a registry office ceremony for a small group, followed by a restaurant, a walk by the Elbe or a party in the evening. The city offers a lot for this: red brick, water, bridges, wide skies and light that can change several times within an hour.

For photography, that means staying flexible. I plan with the weather rather than against it and look for portrait spots that still work in wind or drizzle: a doorway, a covered passage, a window with soft light. For the rest of the day I observe quietly and only step in when a short prompt helps the pictures.

Weddings in Hamburg usually lead to one of four settings: one of the district registry offices, hotels and restaurants in the city centre or around the Alster, the banks of the Elbe with views of the port and passing ships, or an estate, manor farm or barn in the countryside, for example in Schleswig-Holstein, the Altes Land or towards the Lüneburg Heath.

Each of these settings asks something different of time and light. A registry office has fixed slots and often little space; an estate has plenty of room but longer journeys for your guests. The overview below compares the typical settings by light and logistics.

Many couples marry in Hamburg between May and September, when evenings are long and celebrations can move outside. In June and July it stays light well past 9 pm, which leaves plenty of room for portraits after dinner. Rain is possible in Hamburg in every season, so a plan B with covered spots belongs in every timeline.

Autumn and winter have their own qualities: low sun, early dusk and interiors lit by candles and window light. Registry office ceremonies with a small group and editorial sessions work particularly well at this time of year, because the day is more compact and the city is quieter.

A typical Hamburg wedding day starts with getting ready in a flat or hotel, moves on to the registry office or a symbolic ceremony and ends with dinner and a party. Often the legal ceremony and the main celebration fall on different days. In that case I can photograph both without one appointment crowding the other.

Before the wedding we go through the timeline together: how long it takes to cross the city, when the best moment for portraits is, who belongs in the family photographs. A short, clear list for group photos saves a lot of time on the day and gets you back to your guests sooner.

I do not work with fixed packages. Every wedding receives an individual proposal based on format, hours and location. A registry office ceremony followed by portraits needs a different scope from a full day on a country estate.

For a proposal, it helps to know your date, registry office or venue, the approximate number of guests and which parts of the day you would like photographed. If your celebration is outside Hamburg, we discuss travel at the same time so the proposal is complete.
